Weekend recap: 10 for Texas race recap

Good morning! How was everyone’s weekend? Mine, was packed!

Friday evening, hubs and I went to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner…

Tasty dinner! Came home and got ready for an early morning wake up call. Was in bed by 9pm. :)

Saturday Morning, at 4:30AM, I wake up to a random BEEP! sound in the house. After roaming the house in the dark with my iPhone in hand, I found out the smoke alarm battery was dying, and would BEEP! to let us know that. Why was I in the dark? Because I thought maybe the carbon monoxide detector was beeping because there was gas in the house. Did I ever tell ya’ll about that drama? So I was worried about turning a light on and in turn blowing up the house at 4 in the morning. See, smart. :) So after all that craziness, I started to get ready for 10 for Texas.

Hubs volunteered at the race and got this groovy shirt…

Lil’ sis met us at our house so we’d all ride over together. When we piled everything into Hubs car, he goes to start it annnnnnd…. the battery is dead. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DEAD BATTERIES IN OUR HOUSE!? I mean, seriously? So we quickly moved everything to my car and headed off to Market Street. Hubs left for the volunteer check in area and lil’ sis and I got our gear together and post-race snacks and headed towards the porta-potties to get in line {ew}. I seriously do not like those things, they’re just plain nasty!

Once we got to the square, we met up with hubs and got a few pictures in before the run…

remember when I said it was silly they gave us those hats for the race, because its NEVER cold here. Um, yeah. It was stupid cold out that morning! Lil’ sis and I actually opted to keep our hoodies on for the race.

Hubs and I…

100_5692and then we’re off!

100_5694do you see me? :)

Hubs was at the finish line to pass out waters to everyone, so he had my camera, he said this was the guy who won…

100_5695He finished in 51 minutes. Crazy! Apparently no one was behind him for a while

At mile 2 lil sis had to potty so we waited while about 7 other people were in line. I felt fine and just wanted to keep going. After that pit stop it felt like the miles flew by and we were at mile 5 before we knew it. Mile 6 even felt good, but as soon as mile 8 showed up I felt beyond ready to be done with this. Through miles 5, 7 and 9 I had some Fruit Punch Sports Beans. Ya’ll I LOVE those things!! Get some, try it, love it!!

When mile 8 hit all I could see in my head was the finish line and my amazing husband waiting for me.

Every step through mile 8-9 my legs were heavy, my knees felt stiff but I was not going to stop! Almost there. Almost there. Almost there!

And then we saw my mom, lil’ sis’ boyfriend and MY HUSBAND!! We ran our hearts out and then we were there…

and this me is catching my breath!…

100_5700

and feeling amazing. Despite the pain my body was physically feeling, mentally I was so proud of myself. Never did I think I’d push myself this way. I just ran DOUBLE DIGITS!

After Hubs grabbed me some water and a banana, I was so hungry.

100_5703

We snacked on the steps and listened to the announcer give out prizes, then we heard him said “1495″. I looked at lil’ sis and said “That’s YOU!” She won a Nike backpack and hat. :)

Soon after Hubs and I headed home and I crashed. Slept for a good 4 hours. 4 HOURS ya’ll! Me. Napping. It’s crazy. But well deserved.

After much rest and lots of h2O, hubs and I met up with friends of ours and had a delicious dinner and then came home for a game of Trivial Pursuit…

100_5704

Ash and I were on a team and Joe and Hubs were on a team. Of Course, Ash and I rocked the game and the guys cheated. Cheaters.

Good times though… good times.

And then there was Sunday… all that consisted of was REST REST REST. And major soreness, my hamstrings were killing me {and still doing so}. Stretching them feels like fire on the back of my legs. So worth the pain though. I’ve never felt so accomplished before. Such a great feeling.

Few things I realized on this race:

  1. I felt really good till mile 7. My happy mile is between 5-6.
  2. Hydrating like crazy starting 3 days before a long run will pay off big time
  3. I’m still not a morning person
  4. I want to start training more, I enjoy long Saturday run

So tell me, how was your weekend? What did you go?

Also, Congrats to Morgan for running her first Marathon in Chicago this weekend!! :)

Stories from You.

Huge thank you for everyone’s emails regarding yesterdays post.

I wanted to share a couple of those stories with you today.

Jennifer Sutter told me about her friend Heather Ray. Jennifer’s sister posted a video about Heather Ray on her blog, click here to see the video, {the video isn’t very long, so good. Watch it.} What Heather Ray has been through is beyond my understanding, and how positive and strong she’s stayed through it all speaks volumes to me. Here’s what Jennifer had to say in her email:

“Heather is my oldest friend.  We met in 3rd grade and I was with her the day she found out she had cancer at age 12, was with her at her amputation operation and all of her chemo treatments.  Not fun, but somehow we did our best to laugh.  Truly heartbreaking to know later in her life she still must fight.   A true hero and inspiration to all of us who know her, and those who don’t.  I am proud to be her friend and thankful for people like you and Joanna have the outlet to reach so many with her story.  THANK YOU!!”

Another story I wanted to share with you is from LeighAnn. Here is her story about her Mimi:

securedownloadLeighAnn with her Mimi

“my grandmother had breast cancer…actually she has had cancer THREE times. Let me tell you her journey. When I was a little girl my Mimi, was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was devastating because no one in our family had had cancer before. Not only did she have breast cancer, but she had the most rare breast cancer. She battled it, did chemo and radiation, had a double masetcomy, and won. Then started the remission (you have to be in remission for 10 years before they say you are cancer free). So every year she went for check ups, tests, and exams. On her 10th year check up, I was a freshman in college, I was walking to english class in the rain, I was by the Science building when I got the call that Mimi had cancer again. I was so mad…why would this happen to her again? I didn’t go to class, instead  I went home because I was so upset. This time the cancer was Uterine Cancer, it seemed like an easy fix because they should have just been able to remove her uterus, but no! She again had the most rare cancer, it was called Clear Cell Carcenoma, the reason it is so rare, is because the cancer cells are clear and they can’t see them come up on tests and scans. So the only way to know if the cancer was still there was to watch her other organs to see if they started failing…so she started chemo and radiation again. During this we always did Breast Cancer walks and helped out in diffrent ways to help raise money for breast cancer research. My senior year in college they saw the cancer coming back…her uterus had been removed but the cancer traveled to her lungs, the reason that they found this is because she got a spot on her lungs, otherwise they would have never know that this “clear” cancer had come back. so this time she got uterine cancer on her lung…it wasn’t lung cancer-isn’t that crazy? She had surgery and removed a 1/3 of one of her lungs and did Chemo and radiation again…She is doing well now and the doctors say that she doesn’t have cancer right now. Let me tell you a little bit about her, she is 63 years old, she is a fighter, goes to Chruch every sunday and never lost hope one time. I love her, she is nothing but inspiration to me. If I could give her an award I would. If I had cancer 3 times, I might feel like giving up, but she hasn’t!”

Thank you LeighAnn and Jennifer for sharing these stories. I encourage all of you to keep Heather Ray & Mimi in your prayers. Just like Heather Ray said, people who’ve had breast cancer always worry it may come back. I pray for constant peace in their lives.

If you would like to share your story, whether it be you or someone you know who’s fighting/fought breast cancer and want to share it with Team Giles readers, I’d love to hear from you, email me at: [email protected] :)

How’s that for  perspective on your Friday? :) I know that I can get caught up in the petty things in life, and being reminded that so many people, so many women are fighting battles that are beyond my comprehension, really bring me back into reality. I hope these stories have touched you, inspired you, spoke hope and encouragement to who, no matter what battle you’re facing, big or small.

For tomorrow, I’ll be getting up at crack O’dawn to run 8 miles. Holy monkey. Can’t wait to tell you about it Monday. Have a great weekend!!!

Fitness-Focused

Thank you so much to everyone who commented on yesterdays blog and all your emails. I loved reading about all of your dreams, and I definitely think any of you can make them happen!

Ya’ll! It feels like fall out. I love it! Yesterday I dressed a little “warmer”… Ok not really, but my outfit was really cute, and I had to take a picture!

IMG_0515

Glad I dressed cute and felt that way, because it was a nutso busy day at the office! So many visitors, meetings, crazy, crazy, crazy! But it made the day fly by, so that indeed was nice! Glad I brought a mid-morning snack, because I ended up taking a late lunch…

IMG_0516

Tasty trail mix!! Any of you trail mix fans? Oh so good!

Tomorrow morning calls for a 7-mile run. Wish me luck! The plan is to get out of the house at sun-rise {I just can’t run in the dark alone….don’t judge.} and afterward catch the Wholyfit class that morning. Busy morning! Just the way I like my Saturday mornings, fitness-focused!

That evening the birthday festivities will continue! Bring on the par-tay! I hear there will be queso… good thing I’m running that morning! ;)

So tell me, do you plan your weekends with fitness on the brain? Are you fitness-focused?

You deserve to be happy

Look at these gorgeous flowers my honey brought to the office for me:

I tried the Chai Tea Luna bar the other day. I’m not a big Chai fan, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like this bar…

IMG_0410

IMG_0411

“Chai and black tea with fragrant cinnamon, cardamom and a vanilla cream drizzle.”

The bar was absolutely delicious! I definitely would eat these again. The taste wasn’t over bearing. It had the perfect blend of each flavor. It made for a great 3:00 pm afternoon snack.  So far, every Luna Bar I’ve tried has been amazing, Luna hasn’t let me down. :)

So I was watching Biggest Loser last night {Thank you DVR}. Anyone else see it? Oh so GOOD!

There was a scene with Trainer Bob and Shay, Shay is a 30-something year old, with a hard past. Bob asked her a question: “What do you want to get out of all of this?” Shay’s response “I just want to be happy.” Bob tells her, “You deserve to be happy.” Shay talked about how she feels all this weight she has, is just emotion hurts and pain that she’s been holding on to.

I really believe those statements alone speak so loudly. Have you ever held on to emotional baggage so tightly that you feel like its weighing you down? Do you just want to be happy? I agree with Bob, you deserve to be happy.

Question: If you could do anything without fear of failing, what would you do?
