Happy Earth Day

How to celebrate!

  • Bike to work. Not only is riding a bike good for your health, it’s great for the environment too. Pedaling everywhere helps you conserve the planet’s resources and reduce the amount of pollutants going into the air. Compared to a car, it also takes way less energy and parts to manufacture and ship a bike to consumers. If biking just isn’t an option for you, take public transportation or try carpooling instead.
  • Use less energy. Reducing how many things you turn on and switch off is a no-brainer, but use Earth Day as an excuse to really unplug. Reducing energy has its health benefits too: taking the stairs is a great way to burn calories, and turning off your computer or TV is a great way to de-stress and increase social interaction.
  • Bring your lunch to work. Save your money and avoid wasteful to-go containers by packing your lunch in reusable BPA-free containers. I always eat healthier  when I bring my own lunch because I know exactly what went into it.
  • Exercise outdoors. I can’t think of a greener way to exercise than to go for a run or a walk outside in the fresh air. It’s free, doesn’t rely on a power source, and can even bedone barefoot.
  • Make it a meatless day. I am a big fan of having a weekly meat budget, but for Earth Day I am going strictly vegetarian since commercial meat production has a huge impact on the environment. Here’s a fun fact: livestock flatulence and belching is to blame for a significant percentage of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. If you can’t go vegetarian, stick to local and organic foods since they won’t have traveled as far to reach you, and are clear of pesticides.

How are you going to celebrate Earth Day?

I have a Green Thumb

“(a green thumb) A natural skill for gardening; A person with this skill

or um… trying to have one.

I’ve never been a gardener, been into gardening, the dirt, the bugs, the weeds, nor have do I really even like getting my hands dirty.

But, I love beautiful yards, with bright gorgeous flower beds and lovely garden fixtures. Oh how I envy the neighbors fabulous yard and was even more envious when the “YARD OF THE MONTH” sign went up.

Envy = Green. right? Not so much.

SO! I decided to get over myself {which was the only thing in my way} and take on this {what feels like} huge task of creating a beautiful yard.

Now its not much, but boy did it feel like I did a lot… this is my process so far…

My before:

those weeds about beat me up!

and after:

I know it doesn’t look like much.. but its a big ol’ accomplishment for me! :)

I also love, love, love roses and got this climbing rose to plant on the side of the house:

Isn’t she lovely?

Roses are my favorites. I’d love to have a whole yard of roses everywhere.

I also made a wreath for the front door…

what a domesticated diva I am. ;) My wreath needs a bow desperately, and that is yet another skill I lack. Maybe I should go to bow-making school? Hmm…

Go Green & Blogger Spot Light

dinner

I was reading a little tid-bit in Fitness Magazine{which I couldn’t find online, sorry!) the other day about using cash instead of a card to pay for meals when you go out to eat, because when spending CASH verses just using your card, you tend to order less food, you skip the appetizer, drinks, dessert etc. Hubs and I have already been doing this and it’s true. You not only save money, you save on calories too.

You’ll be just fine having the cobb-salad. So why do you often add on chips & dips AND a lemonade? Because when you bring your card, you don’t FEEL the money leave your bank account. There’s something about that hard-earn green cash in your pocket that makes you protect it more, and you really do think about your food choices. I dare you, go green, try it. You’ll notice a difference in what you order when you’re paying with cash on hand. :)

And have I mentioned that I love birthday month?… I think I did before.. maybe… in case you missed last Tuesday, check it out here.

The Blogger Spot Light for this week is: My sweet friend Melissa.

Melissa and I met earlier this past March in a Financial Peace University classes Hubs & I took. I am so glad I met Melissa, she is such an awesome friend and I’ve loved getting to know her and her Husband more. And YOU should get to know her blog. Melissa is a runner. She’s training for the Women’s Nike Half-Marathon and I am SO  excited for her!

update pic

Melissa has been training all summer long, through this awful gross humid Texas heat, waking up at crazy O-clock in the morning to get her run in before the sun would shine. She seriously impresses the bananas outta me! Be sure to check out Melissa blog and send her some encouragement on her training and quickly approaching race! :) Love ya Mel!!

So tell me, who is your blogger spot-light this week?

Go Green!

happystpatricksday

I love this Holiday. Always have. My green moment for the day already, I had juiced some fruit and added some Kale, it was definitely tasty. I meant to take a picture, but drank it too fast. :)

What are your St Patrick’s Day plans?
