It’s a New Day…

…with new exciting things happening.

Two very cool things happening today in fact. This morning, I’ll be teaching my very first bootcamp class with Masterpiece Fitness

This is the bootcamp classes I’ve been taking for the last few months. So I was completely ecstatic when Jenn asked if I wanted to become one of their bootcamp trainers. YES!! And this morning is my first class, so wish me luck!! Newness is always a little nerve-wrecking. :)

Second, this evening I get the honor of hosting the FitBlog chats on Twitter!

If you’ve been around the Healthy Living community for a while, you probably have heard of FitBlog Chats, if you haven’t you’re missing out! It’s a great time to chat about all things Healthy Living and get to know a lot of great bloggers and tweeters who share a common interests in Healthy Living. It starts tonight at 9PM ET.

In other exciting news, 5K’s are all the rage and I have a few lined up!

First, Masterpiece Fitness 5K on Saturday, I’m excited to do this race with my lil’sis. Who is a running machine lately. Seriously, that girl is getting some serious speed. Normally we run together during a 5K race, but I told her this time to go all out and let me turtle it up behind her. ;)

Next race is one that is close to my heart, my first ever 5K race is back! The Bunny Run!!!

I hope Tomball always does this race. I love it. :) I know my friend Kim will be running it too and rumor has it so will my girl Melissa. Hopefully a few of you locals will too *looking at you and you and you and you*

Then the weekend after the Bunny Run, there’s a 5K my church is participating with (which I’m SO excited about) called “Run for Hope“.

100% of the proceeds go to Camp Hope, a camp for teens in foster care and TRAClife our year round mentoring program for foster teens. How cool is that? I can’t wait to be apart of this race. :)
Now I’ve gotta get moving (wish me LUCK!! *gulp*), but I leave you with a random question….
QUESTION: What flavor of toothpaste do you prefer? Personally I like a pepperminty feel. These are the random things I think about at crazy O’clock in the morning. :)

{Q & A Time}

HUGE thank you to everyone who’s been voting for me at the Face of Fitness cover model contest. The facebook posts (108 likes!? OMG) & Tweets are crazy kind of you. I’m overwhelmed. :) I heart you all!!

I thought about answering some questions here that I get from readers, in case someone else might have wanted to ask the same thing. :) Win-win!

Question:

Ashleigh asked:

“Love your yoga bag. Where did you get it from?”

Answer:

I got this bag & mat as a birthday gift a few years ago from my mom and lil’sis. They got it at Target, its part of the Gaiam collections that Target carries. You can get the bag here at Target. But Amazon has it with the bag and mat combo available.

Question:

Clarice asked:

“Where did you buy the shirt you’re wearing in your 5k?”

Answer:

I love this top! It’s from Champion. I got it at the San Marcos outlet, but I have seen it online on at amazon, I can’t find it on champions website anymore. It’s a seamless bra top, empire waist and flowy at the waist. Crazy comfortable. Definitely worth checking out ya’ll.

Question:

Kelly asked:

“Do you run everyday?”

Answer:

Nope. I’m not training for a big race right now. I have a 5K coming up towards the end of this month and then I’m doing another 5K in April. So my running schedule is scattered. I do however want to become a very discipline runner and run everyday because I can. :) In time my friends, in time.

Question:

Michele asked:

“Where do you go take Zumba at?”

Answer:

Glad you asked. I love ZUMBA! :) I go Friday’s to MoCo Zumba. They now have classes Monday through Friday at Stone Bridge in the Woodlands. You can find out more about them on their facebook page.

Thanks for asking and feel free to shoot me a question at [email protected] and I’d happily answer. :)

Gotta jet, work is calling and its going to be a BUSY day. Lord, help me!

Quick shout out to my girl, Ashley!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BESTIE!! Love you so! One day I’ll talk you into starting your blog. ;)

Question of the day: Walmart or Target? Where’s your place to shop?

Yoga in the Park

Happy Friday Ya’ll!

Welcome to my dusty little blog. It’s in the process of being redesigned. *Squeel* :)

I need some new pictures, so the lil’sis and I went to the park yesterday and had a mini photo shoot and then did yoga in the park.

It was glorious.

Remember that awesome 5K I ran a couple of weeks ago? I totally forgot that pictures were taken until my friend Rachel reminded me.

I love the thumbs up at the end. Apparently that’s what I do. ;) Race photos are so funny. I’ve always thought about making a crazy/silly face or doing something nuts when I know the photographer in a race is taking my picture… but never get enough guts to do it when I get my chance.

Enough photos of me. Goodness.

What about you? Have you ever done something crazy just for a fun photo op?

So you want to start Running… {Guest Post}

{If you like my blog, would you please take a moment and nominate me athttp://www.womenshealthmag.com/features/blogcontest – If you’re entering the contest too, let me know and I’ll vote for you as well!}
Today’s guest post comes to you from Morgan from CAUTION: Redhead Running
Lauren, that lucky bum, is out on vacation and put a call out for guest posts. I happily volunteered but never having done a guest post before I had to ask her what I should write about and she suggested a running breakdown of how to get started and keep going. So with that I give you: “So you want to start Running…”

“How do I start running?”

This is a question I am often asked by friends, family, and readers of my blog. While I would never consider myself an expert on the subject, I do feel as if I’ve had enough experience to get them pointed in the right direction. I start off by asking them a few exercise related questions;

1. How often do you exercise now?

2. How often do you and are able to exercise if you were to start a training program?

3. What is the farthest you’ve ever run and how recent?

4. What is your goal?

It’s important to establish what kind of exercise base you already have so ou can figure out where to start from. If you do not exercise regularly, you’ll want to start off slow and low (mileage), building up endurance for both over many weeks. If you exercise fairly regularly and feel comfortable hitting the elliptical or other like cardio equipment for at least 15-30 minutes, you’ll find it easier to build up the miles and even add in different kinds of workouts like speed, hills, etc…

Having a goal, for the sake of this post let’s say it’s to run your first 5k, is a great motivator and will keep you on track as you begin your running journey. (Websites like active.com have a quick and easy race finder right on their home page where you can you can search races in your area.)

Now that you have established your base and picked a goal it’s time to find a training plan! There are many, many, MANY plans out there to choose from and you could spend all day tracking them down but I recommend the following:

BeginnerCool Running – Coach to 5k Plan / From the Couch to 5k / The Galloway Method – These sites provide excellent run/walk methods of training which are perfect if you have not been exercising regularly and are really just getting started. The idea is to build up your running endurance slowly while still going the miles needed to train for any particular distance. Many people use this kind of method to train for longer distances and stay injury free.

NoviceHal Higdon’s 5k Training Plan for Novices – A step up from the run/walk method (while still using it on certain days)

IntermediateHal Higdon’s 5k Training Plan for Intermediate / Running Planet’s Your First 5k – Both of which eliminate walking from the plan and focus purely on running only.

I also recommend joining your local running club, most of which have on-staff coaches and organize various distance running programs, where you can meet like-minded beginner’s who will help keep you motivated and share in your journey. (Miles go by faster with friends!) These websites keep a catalogue of running groups that you can search by area:

USA Track & Field Club Search / Road Runner’s Club of America

While you’re hitting the net for more information, check out these great reads about getting started in running:

How To Train For Your First 5k or this post I recently wrote up about all the stuff nobody ever told me starting out, Nobody Ever Told Me That?!?! (Running)

It’s easy to get derailed when you’re first starting out because you can become unmotivated at the lack of immediate progress. Remember that it typically takes about three weeks to ingrain a routine so stick with it, it will get easier with time!!! Another derailment is injury, newbie runner’s tend to be a little over-eager and as a result end up with common over-use injuries such as shin-splints, iliotibial band syndrome, achilles tendonitis, and plantar faciitis. It’s too easy to push yourself too hard getting started, I can’t stress enough to listen to your body and back off the training if you start to feel discomfort. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience pain as a result of your training.

Finally, the most important piece of wisdom I can share with newbie runner’s is this; Running should be fun, not a chore. Positive attitude can be the difference between a good run and a bad run, so go out there and have fun!!!
