Race Recap: Masterpiece 5K

Saturday morning bright and early, I picked up my lil’sis and headed to the Masterpiece 5K in The Woodlands.

Speaking of bright…

We properly fuel before a race

This 5K race was partnered up with Luke’s Locker and the 5K series that they normally host in The Woodlands.

at 8:00am on the dot, the 5k race began. We ran one (wait, two? gosh I forgot) loops around the parking lot and then set out into the running path ways…

It’s the neon crayons! (photo from of masterpiece)

For the first half of mile 1, lil’sis and I stuck together, then I could feel like I was holding her back, homegirl has way more speed built in than I do. So I told her “Don’t hold back, go fast.” So she took off. :)

Mile 1, was rough, it was humid out and quickly into the run I got a huge side stitch that felt like it was going to burst! The pain was ridiculous really. I was surprised I was even having this pain, because the last 5k race was so perfect, no side stitches at all! I did feel like in the first mile I pushed myself really hard, I wanted so badly to finish under 40:00.

Mile 2, ….”breathe in, breathe out.“…. “I will not walk, I will not walk, I will not walk.“… “Pain is temporary, victory is forever.” and I could go on listing all the motivating things I was telling myself… “Just DO IT!” I knew that I was stronger than how my body was feeling. In fact, everything felt AWESOME, minus my side. My side hated me. But I didn’t stop, I didn’t quit, I kept breathing and pushed through the annoying pain.

Mile 3, I picked up speed. Who am I??? I’m running, not walk/running a 5K, AND I’m picking up speed at the end? Then, it was “oh, there’s the finish line! Time to sprint!!” and that I did ya’ll. I came around the corner, saw the finish line, saw that I was SO CLOSE to coming in under 40:00 and I sprinted my heart out to the end! It hurt, but I didn’t care. I wanted to do better than the last race and push myself harder than I had before… and I did. :)

I finished in 40:08:19. Please note: That’s a new PR. :)

The last 5K, I finished in 40:25. I’m so VERY pleased! I’m that much closer to bringing my time under 40:00. Perhaps on 4/9 that’ll happen? ;) I’m so crazy jazzed over this race. I cannot relay to ya’ll just how much I wanted to stop running and just walk the rest of this race. My side was screaming at me and I could feel myself wanting to give up. But I remembered something very important that my amazing Pink friend said to me after my last 5k…

“…There is no trick to 5Ks. They hurt and they hurt the whole time (if you are doing it right) and you have to leave everything on the course. You’re right, it’s a total mind game. You can’t slow down because there is no chance to make up time later….-Pink Girl

Well… I was doing something right, because this hurt, but it was SO WORTH every step. Never regret a race, good or bad, because the fact of the matter is you’re DOING it. :) I’m one happy girl right now! Thanks Pink Girl, your words helped me push through!

Also, my lil’sis is friggin’ amazing. She finished in 33:25! HOLLA! So proud of you lil’sis!!! Her last 5K time was 44:27. Um, hello do you see that? She’s amazing. Just simply amazing!!

After the race we treated ourselves to pedicures!

The massage during the pedicure was so beyond awesome, I wanted to hug the lady and thank her. My feet were so thankful. :)

Then spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing…

and hydrating.

That evening I spent some quality with my husband… we went to the gun show (boring), car shopping, dinner at Tommy Bahamas and then watched a movie at home with our little pupster. It was a fabulous day.

What did you do this weekend?

SHOUT OUTS TO: Kim, Rachel and Troy for running the Dallas Rock ‘n Roll Half-Marathon this weekend!! Ya’ll are amazing!!!!

I love when runners wear bright colors, because it makes it easier to cheer for them. “Looking strong, green!” “Keep it up, pink!”

  13. congrats! congrats! congrats! congrats! congrats! and for your sister: congrats!
way to go on the new PR!
i get side stitches alot, especially when i get nervous or excited and forget to breathe (for example, coming up on the end of a race, or doing this one loop with a hill through my neighborhood… i get a cramp every time just before the hill!)
one trick that i’ve learned is that it’s more important to focus on breathing OUT than breathing in. **if you push all of your air out, more will naturally come in** anywho, just focus on blowing out all of your air as hard as you can. you might sound kinda’ funny, but it works every time for me. =) way to go again!
