I like to get stuff at Costco (food and other items). Some of their stuff freezes well so i stock up and have it on hand. They even have coupons sometimes.

Generic brands! HEB has the best generic brands - they market their Hill Country Fair products to taste equal or better to the name brand competitive products. They're very big on quality testing and comparing what else is out there. Walmart's generic Great Value brand is kinda gross..... Target has good generic brands but its more expensive than HEB generic brands... and HEB generic brands still taste better than Target ones.

Farmer's markets! its fresh, homegrown, and its usually cheaper. Plus they're willing to bargain with you. The closest one I know of is on Rayford Rd.

China town! For stuff that's not going to spoil, you can get super savings on awesome things down there compared to buying the same thing at the 'international foods' section in grocery stores. But it only benefits you if you've got a big list of stuff, not just one thing.... While you're out there though, some of the supermarkets have regular groceries for cheap. Milk, bread, eggs, etc is a lot cheaper than if you get it at. say, HEB... Don't be intimidated by the cultural difference - everyone is friendly!! :) And we all speak the same language anyway - MONEY!

And, if big crowds and lots of people and long lines don't bother you if it means you're going to save... then there's a store out in Pasadena that's an HEB but its targeted at lower income/hispanic spanish speaking community - its called Mi Tienda. [my store] It's got EVERYTHING that HEB has, but its alot cheaper. I'm talking 5 avocados for a dollar cheap! 35 cent tomatoes! GOOD stuff for super cheap! You can easily load up on stuff to last you a while and save. And using coupons here will save you even more than using coupons at a regular HEB since the prices are already cheap.

But the savings come with a bit of a drawback - long lines, big crowds, and a super hideous drive to Pasadena... In this economy though, I do just about anything if it means the savings outweigh the cost. And here, it definitely does.

As far as non-grocery items, ebay! If you know what you want and don't mind waiting to get it, then go find whatever it is you're looking for [e.g. shoes], write down the specs, size, even ISBN barcode number, and search for it on ebay. Mom got a 500 dollar scuba vest for 20 dollars on ebay that way. My sister got 200 dollar scuba fins w/booties for 15 + shipping that way also. there's plenty of actual stores on ebay, not just a person who's selling something they found in their garage.

Anyway there's my two cents.... hope it helps!
