What exactly is this thing called Portion Control?
Sadly, I have to admit, I have never fully mastered it. *sigh*
Shame.
So now, with our 45 day challenge, it’s a great time to learn. Since I’m the cook here in Team Giles’ house, I want to get this right. It’s important to me that we both are very healthy and create that lifestyle.
Here’s some things I’ve found about portion control, via a fab-o site called Fitsugar:
Here are a few easy ways to remember portion sizes (these might be familiar to you, but it is always good to review – America On the Move just reminded me).
- 1 serving of fruit or vegetables is the size of your fist
- 1 serving of cooked rice, pasta, cereal, chips, or pretzels is a rounded handful (just one handful!!!)
- 1 serving of meat, fish, or poultry is the size of a deck of cards
- 1 serving of baked potato is the size of a computer mouse
- Two fingers = 1 serving of cheese
- Open palm = 1 serving of meat
- Closed fist = 1 serving of fruit or vegetables
- Cupped hand = 1 serving of cereal or grain
- Tip of thumb = 1 serving of margarine, oil, or salad dressing
- Thumb = 1 serving of candy
So tell me, have you ever had problems with portion control? Have you had to weigh your food, measure it out just to make sure you didn’t go over? What are your tips and tricks?

Who’s saying what?
