Portion Control

What exactly is this thing called Portion Control?

Sadly, I have to admit, I have never fully mastered it. *sigh*
Shame.

So now, with our 45 day challenge, it’s a great time to learn. Since I’m the cook here in Team Giles’ house, I want to get this right. It’s important to me that we both are very healthy and create that lifestyle.

Here’s some things I’ve found about portion control, via a fab-o site called Fitsugar:

Here are a few easy ways to remember portion sizes (these might be familiar to you, but it is always good to review – America On the Move just reminded me).

  • 1 serving of fruit or vegetables is the size of your fist
  • 1 serving of cooked rice, pasta, cereal, chips, or pretzels is a rounded handful (just one handful!!!)
  • 1 serving of meat, fish, or poultry is the size of a deck of cards
  • 1 serving of baked potato is the size of a computer mouse
  • Two fingers = 1 serving of cheese
  • Open palm = 1 serving of meat
  • Closed fist = 1 serving of fruit or vegetables
  • Cupped hand = 1 serving of cereal or grain
  • Tip of thumb = 1 serving of margarine, oil, or salad dressing
  • Thumb = 1 serving of candy

So tell me, have you ever had problems with portion control? Have you had to weigh your food, measure it out just to make sure you didn’t go over? What are your tips and tricks?

{Team Giles} 45 Day Challenge

~Friends of Rodney and I told us about a challenge that they made for themselves and had 45 days to do it.~

That challenge is to lose 10% or more of your total body weight.

The prize? $500.00... cash. Score! Ya’ll know my love for shopping and all things that involve such things. :)

So hubs and I talked it over and decided we could totally do this.
We’re up for the 45 day challenge, and considering Rod and I are both very competitive, this will be a battle till the end!

The Challenge stated today and ends May 11th.

We weighed in this morning {omg ya’ll, it made me cringe, darn vacations… using it as more motivation though} and wrote down our weight and the goal to lose to get us at 10% weight loss. BUT if we both reach the goal, its a tie, SO going over that 10% is a must in my book. :)

Hey, I’m up against a good competitor. Rod is a good runner {I want to be, I so want to do a marathon one day}, he used to play football in high school, and when you give the man a goal, he tackles it. {No football pun intended}

However, I can definitely give hubs a run for his money! Give me a challenge? I’m driven, determined, the phrase “No retreat, no surrender” {an awesome motto from my youth pastor as a teen}. That phrase is my mantra, “No retreat, no surrender”. Game ON!

I’m totally excited to see where we’ll be in 45 days. This weekend I headed out to {favorite store} Target and picked up this:
food-013

I’m pretty stoked about it. There’s tons of awesome recipes and also gives you the nutritional facts as well, so I have a clue what I’m getting myself into. There’s perfect dishes for hubs meat-eating ways and great vegetarian options for me. Woo! I’ll let you now how the meals go.

This morning hubs and I headed our separate ways for our workouts, hubs headed to the gym and I went off to Wholyfit. I had a great workout, still feeling score from this weekends workout. I may be crazy, but I love that feeling, don’t you?

So tell me…
Have you ever done a fitness challenge or done something to get ready for an event? {e.g. marathon, wedding, family reunion, etc} Tell me when you did to prepare for your event, what you ate, what results you saw?

Things I Love {Thursday}

Something that I absolutely love and I don’t use love lightly. I really do love this.

For anyone who knows me well, knows that I am a Green Tea Drinker. greentea

I haven’t always been a tea drinker, in fact I used to think it was gross. Oh no, not anymore, years ago {not sure how many years, but years nonetheless} I’ve been a Green Tea fan and think it’s quite dandy.

Even on our Wedding Day, I had my Starbucks Green Tea with me. :)

It was great.

And that’s something, that I love. :)
